Frequently Asked Questions
C'mon. You haven't really watched all of the top 250 films, have you? That'd be over... 538 hours!
Yes, we have, and yes, it is. We're tired.
Who are you guys?
Siang and Jonathan are the co-creators of The Beige Index.
Siang Lu is the award-winning author of a novel – The Whitewash – which, if you found this site amusing and thought-provoking, you will 100% also enjoy reading. Siang is behind a great majority of the jokes on this site, and he wrote them on much less sleep than you'd imagine (unless you didn't like the site, in which case you should imagine him oversleeping every day).
Jonathan O'Brien runs the data, design, and communication firm Jonobri Consulting. If this site's design, aesthetics and functionality has inspired you to pursue a stunning data visualisation project of your own, you should reach out to jonathan@jonobri.com. Jonathan is also an award-winning writer - Siang just beat him to the punch on the technicality of having a book published.
Alan is a former venture capitalist responsible for launching the Click Bae brand, whose legacy is covered in The Whitewash. He has since made a lateral career move to become an intern for The Beige Index. We give him the stuff we don't want, like 'blame', 'research', and 'write the FAQ but give us the credit'.
Some interesting things we have learned about Alan are:
- He hates films
- He just wants to “see [his] daughter again”
God. Siang, I need to know about your novel, The Whitewash. ASAP. I canceled all my meetings just to read it. Please, tell me more about it, the suspense is tearing me apart. I need copies, now, preferably multiple copies for some odd reason I can't quite remember.
Stop twisting our arm! You can read more about the book here, but let it be known that we share the link only with great, really tremendous reluctance.
If you have a rights query related to The Whitewash, please reach out to Amy Fletcher at Simon & Schuster UK.
Can I or my firm commission The Beige Index for analytics and data visualisations using a bespoke film dataset attached to our:
- Streaming service catalogue
- Individual film production
- Academic research
- Event programming, such as university film courses and film festivals
Yes. Just get in touch with us at info@thebeigeindex.com.
Hey, is this Onion article about you?
God, we hope so.
Why can't I find [Insert film title] on your site?
The current IMDb Top 250 user-voted films featured on The Beige Index was generated in June, 2022. [Insert film title] (great pick, by the way!) was likely not featured on the list at that time.
Why can’t you use the American spelling for words on your site, like ‘color’, ‘labor', and ‘aggrandizement’?
Because we’re Australian.
Well it’s making me very uncomfortable. Could you change the spelling to be Americanised?
No.
How do you count the ethnicities of Wookies, Ewoks, Orcs, etc.?
We go by the ethnicity of the actor playing the role, not the character. You can learn more by reading about our methodology here.
What's your favourite film out of the Top 250?
- Siang: Parasite (2019)
- Jon: There Will Be Blood (2007)
- Alan: Sherlock Jr. (1924), because 'it's the least long one'.
of the Top 250's credited cast lands in the palest band of the beige scale.
We counted every credited actor across all 250 films — then watched 500+ hours so you don't have to.
The beige-o-meter
Each credited cast member is coded 1–5. Averaged across the cast, a film lands somewhere on this scale.
