The Bridge on the River Kwai
Dir. David Lean (1957, IMDb #165)
Stop the presses, we might’ve found the beige unicorn. A 50s Hollywood film with a beige score of what? With how many East Asians and Southeast Asians? And with no racist 50’s anecdotes to be found in sight?
Wow.
Oh there’s the racist 50’s anecdote: Columbia Pictures halted filming for three weeks when they realised there were no white women in the film. Director David Lean was forced to de-beige the film, hiring a token white woman, Ann Sears (Nurse), to sex up the film in what Lean later called “a very terrible scene”.
