To Kill a Mockingbird
Dir. Robert Mulligan (1962, IMDb #109)
We re-watched this film, intending to gather snarky trivia for this write-up.
But after watching Brock Peters's (Tom Robinson) desperate testimony...
And Gregory Peck’s (Atticus Finch) stirring appeal to righteousness...
And the wretched guilty verdict, formed sans evidence and delivered by a panel of (white) ‘peers’...
And Atticus as he lingers and finally leaves, the last man in the courtroom…
And how the men and women in the coloured balcony stand for him, in respect for his futile valiance…
Well, we sort of got choked up, is what happened.
To our modern sensibilities the beige score of To Kill a Mockingbird may appear rather quaint and low, but its beige heart will never go out of style.
