The Big Lebowski
Dir. Joel Coen & Ethan Coen (1998, IMDb #200)
Where to start with this film? There are so many beige signifiers.
We could begin by acknowledging the very respectable number of beigeground folks in this film, mostly in thug or driver roles.
Or the film’s popularisation of White Russian cocktails, referred to as ‘Caucasians’ by Jeffrey ‘The Dude’ Lebowski (played by Jeff Bridges).
Or the weird tidbit of non-Jewish actors playing Jews: See: The Dude, The Big Lebowski (played by David Huddleston) and Walter Sobchak (played by John Goodman). Or weirder still, Jewish actors playing beige folks. See: Jesus ‘The Jesus’ Quintana (played by John Turturro), and Saddam Hussein (played by Jerry Haleva).
But really, the thing that ties this entire beige patchwork together was always going to be the rug: Persian.
